Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged the England football fans NOT to boo their players when they take the knee at kick-off.
In both of the Three Lions’ warm-up games ahead of the Euro 2020 tournament, the players have taken the knee ahead of kick-off and have been audibly booed by the home supporters.
It’s a puzzling strategy from the England fans, who ought to be throwing their support behind their players ahead of a tournament that they have a genuine chance of going far in.
Ultimately, it comes down to fans’ distaste for the politicisation of football.
You’d expect that the Prime Minister, or anyone from No. 10, would see fit to condemn booing of the anti-discrimination gesture. However, to date, there has been no official communication from the government.
Boris Johnson has now, via his spokesperson, revealed his wish for fans to support the players, rather than boo them. His spokesperson is quoted by Bloomberg saying:
“[Boris Johnson] would like to see everyone getting behind the team to cheer them on, not boo.”
“The prime minister wishes all the home nation teams success,. I’m sure you’ll see a tweet or two throughout the tournament.”
Some may take issue with the fact that there is a reluctance to directly condemn the booing of the knee, but this is as good as we’re likely to get from Boris.

Who cares what Boris has to say, the Country is in turmoil and he is throwing his weight about this ridiculous statement that supports BLM and the black power movement.
The fans has said it all with what they do not want to see, our players taking a knee for an organisation that is ok with violence and criminal activities.
I will never watch my national sides ever again because of this.
