Euro 2020 could potentially be played in just one country according to new plans

According to ESPN UEFA have decided that cancelling Euro 2020 is not an option as the financial impact would be too severe.

Instead of an outright cancellation Europe’s football governing body has put together several proposals to tackle the situation created by the global pandemic.

The tournament is already months behind after it was postponed last summer due to the outbreak of Covid-19 across the planet.

With the possibility of hosting games with a full capacity crowd one proposal is to play at 70 per cent capacity and another proposal is to play with 30 per cent capacity.

This creates more problems for UEFA though as they have already sold a record number of tickets for the Euros which was originally set to take place across 12 different cities.

Should the 12 cities option become unavailable another proposal was put forward to move the tournament to one country with France, Germany, England ,Scotland and Russia as potential options.

Of that list the UK are the least likely due to their current high Covid case numbers and the complications being caused by Brexit.

France and Germany are said to be the frontrunners as France held the 2016 tournament and has the infrastructure to facilitate 24 team, as does Germany who are lined-up to host the 2024 tournament.

UEFA will make have to submit their final decision in mid-March which is most likely to not include maximum capacity games.
