Joey Barton assault trial halted over concerns key details are ‘getting lost in translation’

The assault trial involving Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton has been paused after the judge grew concerned details were being “lost in translation,” report the Guardian.

Barton, who was best known during his playing days for stints with Manchester City, Newcastle United and QPR, was renown for being an often aggressive and fiery character.

The now Bristol Rovers boss was charged with assault for an alleged attack on former Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel, an act of violence which he denies.

The case has gone to court, but it has not been seamless, as the Guardian report.

As is detailed in the report, Barton’s trial has been halted after the judge overseeing proceedings revealed his concern that details being outlined by Stendel were being missed.

Judge Jeremy Richardson QC is quoted by the Guardian saying:

“It is just not right to struggle on.”

“Unfortunately this morning I became increasingly concerned that things are getting lost in translation. He is a critical witness in this case. It’s not fair to him and not fair to anyone in this case.”

Football is an international game, which is one of its great pluses, but in this case, the differences in both language and geography are proving difficult to overcome.

A new date for the trial will be confirmed when it becomes clear when Stendel will be able to return to the UK to provide evidence in the flesh, as the Guardian report.
