Agreement reached: Philippe Coutinho set for Premier League return

Aston Villa have reportedly reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Philippe Coutinho on loan for what remains of the season.

Coutinho was an absolute gem of a footballer during his time with Liverpool. It was his performances at Anfield that convinced Barcelona to make him one of the most expensive players in history.

However, the Brazilian has struggled to impress at his dream club. Having been unable to produce his best performance level over several years at the Nou Camp, Barca have found themselves keen to get rid.

Thankfully for the Catalan giants, Steven Gerrard appears willing to sign Coutinho based on his performances five-to-six years ago. A short-term loan agreement is set to be completed, as per reports.

It feels comparable to Everton’s ‘coup’ of getting James Rodriguez through the door. There will be flashes of brilliance, but the player that he once was no longer resides inside.

Aston Villa supporters will be understandably excited to sign a player with Coutinho’s reputation, particularly mid-season, but they also ought to manage their expectations of what he can realistically produce.
