Mainz CEO Christian Heidel has revealed that Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel once sniffed grass, report the Daily Star.
Taken out of context, that sounds rather bizarre. In truth, it’s still pretty weird even when you find out the reasons why.
Tuchel not only a great football manager, but an eccentric personality. It’s his weird and wonderful nature that sets him apart from many of his counterparts.
However, the depths of Tuchel’s weirdness have now been revealed in a tell-all interview with Mainz CEO Christian Heidel, a former colleague of the Chelsea boss.

As quoted by the Daily Star, Heidel has revealed how Tuchel once sniffed grass ahead of a pre-season friendly.
“We were once on a training camp in Austria for a friendly and Thomas was looking really closely at the grass.”
“He was lying on the ground, measuring the height, sniffing… And he was so thrilled with this pitch he wanted me to sign the green-keeper!”
Tuchel was merely impressed with the quality of the football field, hence why he got on his hands and eyes and gave it a sniff.
Though, there’s being a perfectionist, with an eye for detail, and then there’s attempting to gauge the aromas being produced by a football field.
He could be accused of being a little bit strange, but nobody will be saying that on Saturday night if he has his hands on the Champions League trophy.
