Southampton took the lead early in the first-half thanks to a beautifully taken Danny Ings goal following an error by Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Saints almost took a two goal lead when Yan Valery was given a guilt edged opportunity late in the game when he nutmegged Liverpool goalkeeper Allison – who was miles off his line – and was only prevented from scoring thanks to the tracking back of Jordan Henderson.

The result means Southampton move into the top six with twenty-nine points while Liverpool remain at the top on thirty-three points despite playing one game more than fellow league leaders Manchester United who will go top if they beat Burnley next week.
