Bruno Fernandes has been underwhelming at Euro 2020 so far – but could there be justification for it?
Fernandes is one of the best players in the Premier League, with his performances for Manchester United over the past 18 months earning him his right to be in that bracket.
However, while many were expecting him to carry that form into Portugal’s Euro 2020 campaign, he has contributed very little for his country thus far.
The 4-2 defeat to Germany last time out was just the latest ‘big game’ that Fernandes has disappeared in, but should we be cutting him some slack?
A stat shared by the Telegraph ahead of Portugal’s clash with France suggested that Fernandes may well have been ran into the ground over the course of the season.
Watched #por & #ger and just thought Bruno Fernandes looked shattered more than anything. He’s played more games for club & country this season than any player across Europe’s top 5 leagues & the 3rd most minutes – and 83 games in 12 months #mufc #fra https://t.co/GRtE93FJb9

He dearly needs a rest if he is to be at his best for Man United next season, but Portugal need him to show up if they are to have any hope of winning Euro 2020.
Bruno is relied on heavily by both his club and country, which must be difficult for a player who has played so much football over the past year – he needs a break.
