Jurgen Klopp Criticises Brexit In Rant About Young Players

Posted by

With new Brexit rules, once the UK leaves the European Union, Premier League teams will not be able to sign overseas players under the age of 18. In stead their will be a points system where younger players are awarded points for every senior appearance, international cap and by the skill level of the League they are playing in.

This will heavily affect a big club like Liverpool that likes to bring in young talent early and adapt them to their philosophy and way of playing in the Premier League.

Klopp has said that sporting director Michael Edwards fought hard for them in negotiations with the FA but to no avail, the new rules will come into place.

In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, Klopp said:

“I am still waiting for the first advantage of Brexit that someone can tell me, what really improves after Brexit.

“It’s not obviously not my thing to say or judge but as an interested person I just wait until the first really positive impact of Brexit.

“Maybe I didn’t read it because I’m too much in football but I don’t remember a lot to be honest.

Klopp then added why he thinks the FA are doing it and why he thinks they’re doing it wrong.

“In football now, let’s use that as an example, the people want to – I think the FA or whatever – want to make sure that the clubs don’t sign too many players from other countries because they are afraid that not enough English talents will make their way.

“If you look at the English youth national teams in the moment, they are in the top two or three – if not top – in nearly all age groups, talent wise 100 per cent and that is with the way we did it before.

“We cannot just create more [English] talents because we deny other talents. But, as I say, it’s not my thing to judge really.

Klopp is right, if you take away other talents then the English players will not have to work as hard to get into their club team leading to a lack of competition and players not growing at the speeds we’ve come to expect.

What do you think of these rules? Is Klopp right?
