‘I am hoping to follow in their footsteps’ – England star wants to emulate Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney

England star Jack Grealish has revealed he is hoping to emulate Three Lions legends Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney, as reported by Sky Sports.

Grealish was given the opportunity to start for England against the Czech Republic on Tuesday night, the first time that he has ever started in a major tournament fixture for his country.

The Aston Villa captain had to wait patiently for his opportunities under Gareth Southgate, but now he’s forced his way into the fold, you imagine he’s here to stay.

Early days in may be in Grealish’s England career, the midfield is not shying away from asserting his ambitions. He wants to follow in the footsteps of some of the best.

Grealish is quoted by Sky Sports speaking after the win over the Czechs.

“If you look back and think of Gazza at Italia 90, that is where he first made a… well he was obviously still well known before, but I think everyone remembers him for that tournament especially.”

“You look at Wayne Rooney in Euro 2004 – I think that was where he set his marker to say I am going to be one of the best in the world.”

“I am hoping to follow in their footsteps and hopefully I can do that if I get more chances in this tournament.”

With England facing either France, Germany or Portugal in the next round, Grealish will have an opportunity to write his name into Three Lions folklore. Only time will tell if it’s an opportunity he will take…
