Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister took to Instagram to voice her anger at the decision, insisting she wanted her brother to leave the tournament.
Portugal’s manager dropped Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench for the side’s 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland, in which the forward’s replacement scored a hat trick. The result appeared to justify Santos’ decision, however, Ronaldo’s family was furious – and wasn’t afraid to show it.
One family member lambasted the decision, whilst Katia Aveiro then took to Instagram a few days after the match to voice her opinions.

They may mean well, but Ronaldo’s family are doing the five-time Balon d’Or winner no favours. Rather than enjoying the end of his career, the narrative around the forward has become one of chaos, controversy, lacklustre performances and a general unwillingness to accept that he is not the player he once was.
This was a chance for Ronaldo to show that despite many incidents suggesting otherwise at Manchester United, he is still a team player, especially for his country. But once again, the Ronaldo camp was more focused on the striker’s exclusion rather than Portugal’s impressive display.
