CRAZY story resurfaces as ex-Premier League player fractures cheekbone in mad circumstances

Posted by

Ex-Premier League player Ivano Bonetti suffered one of the rarest injuries you may ever see in football back in 1996 when he was playing for Grimsby Town.

In the dressing room prior to what ended up being a famous 3-0 FA Cup replay win over West ham, Grimbsy boss Brian Laws was venting his frustration at his side’s 3-2 loss to Luton Town four days prior.

Particularly displeased with Bonetti’s efforts in the match, Laws lauched a plate of chicken wings that was in the dressing room straight at the two-time Serie A winner, breaking the bone beneath his right eye and fracturing his cheekbone.

The injury ruined plans for Bonetti who had arranged a weekend away in Italy with teammates John McDermott, Paul Groves and Craig Shakespeare.

Laws and Bonetti managed to shake hands and move on from the incident, but the latter didn’t hang around for too long, eventually signing for Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer at the end of the season, and who can blame him?

That’s a message to never upset your manager with a bad performance…
