Alan Shearer doesn’t hold back on his assessment of Man United’s Anthony Martial

Premier League all-time top goalscorer and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer didn’t hold back when he gave his assessment of Manchester United striker Anthony Martial in a recent interview.

Speaking to The Athletic, the legendary striker said: “I’ve read that Martial wants to be Manchester United ’s main centre-forward and that he sees it as his position,

“He’s been there for six years. Last season was his best in terms of numbers, but he’s never scored more than 20 league goals in a campaign and I just don’t see the desperation, the hunger, desire and know-how to be a No 9, to score as many goals as he should.

“I see the talent but that isn’t enough at a club that wants to challenge for the biggest honours.

“Martial is quite content to spend time outside the box, which is one of the reasons they signed Edinson Cavani and why, if fit, he’s ahead of Martial in their strongest XI.”

United are said to be in the hunt for a new striker and even drafted in veteran forward Edinson Cavani on a season long loan to bolster the Red Devils attacking options.

The Uruguayan has only started 12 games across all competitions, but has seven goals from his 24 total appearances.

Borussia Dortmund and Norway striker has been heavily linked to several Premier League clubs including Manchester United but the 20-year-old isn’t expected to leave Germany until 2022.

In a recent press conference Manchester United boss Olé Gunnar Solskjaer has said he keeps ‘in touch’ with the Borussia Dortmund star saying:

‘I keep in touch with Erling – it is great to see him become the player he has become. He is a Dortmund player and we wish him well there. Let’s see what life will bring later on.’

Haaland is one of the most sought after players in world football now with reports that Manchester City are willing to pay €30million more than his asking price to sign him.

Chelsea are also linked with the powerhouse striker and Roman Abramovich is said to have given Thomas Tuchel £260million to sign players with Haaland top of his wish list.

The 20-year-old will be available for £68million in June of 2022 when his current contract with Borussia Dortmund expires.
