VIDEO: We will not rip players apart for errors, says Joe Schmidt

Ireland Head Coach Joe Schmidt has said he will not “be trigger happy” about dealing with players who have made mistakes in today’s defeat to England.

England scored two tries in Twickenham today, and they could have had two more if it wasn’t for a forward pass and an illegal move in the ruck, as they appeared to slide past the Irish defence at will at times.

Schmidt said: “We wouldn’t really be trigger happy about targeting someone who has made a few mistakes and saying to them ‘that’s untenable and we’ll move you on’.

“If mistakes get made, we try to build from there rather than ripping them apart. It has served us well in the last two years.”

The Irish boss said his approach was to focus on the players than on results, and then results would hopefully follow.

He said: “Even though there has been some success in recent years, none of it has been result-driven.

“It’s really been focussed on trying to do the bits and peices we need to do really well.

“Hopefully the result is a by-product of doing things well.”
