Cristiano Ronaldo made history with his goal from the penalty spot during Portugal’s Euro 2020 opener against Hungary tonight – he then added another.
With Portugal having been drawn in the ‘group of death,’ group F, alongside Germany and France, they will have been well aware that only a win against Hungary tonight would do.
Ronaldo’s men, who are one of the favourites to go all the way and win Euro 2020, were frustrated for 84 minutes, before Raphael Guerreiro’s deflected effort found its way into the bottom corner.

Within two minutes, Portugal were awarded a penalty, with Ronaldo stepping up to the mark, knowing that he would break two European Championships records if he were to find the net.
Ronaldo, predictably, made no mistake, firing home emphatically.

In doing so, Ronaldo broke two more records, firmly establishing himself as the best player in the history of European international football.
- All-time top-scorer at European Championships: Ronaldo (10) surpasses Platini (9)
- The first player ever to score in five European Championships (04, 08, 12, 16, 20)
During the time spent writing this article, Ronaldo’s added another. His second of the evening, 11th in Euros history, adding the cherry on top what has (eventually) proven to be a brilliant night for Portugal.
