Thomas Tuchel’s assessment of Romelu Lukaku’s performance against Manchester City was pretty damning.
Lukaku, who was recruited over the summer for a reported £97m fee, was supposed to be the player capable of turning Chelsea into Premier League title challengers.
However, playing against the reigning champions on their home turf this afternoon, he produced a performance that was of little benefit to Chelsea, if anything, it was counterproductive.
Lukaku’s first touch was characteristically loose, with the Belgium international scuppering two golden opportunities to get Chelsea on the scoresheet.

Quizzed after the game whether Lukaku had been let down by the service of his teammates, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel shifted the blame onto Lukaku himself.
Tuchel was clearly unimpressed with the performance Lukaku produced at the Etihad this afternoon and made no secret of it while speaking to the media…

Tuchel on BT Sport: “Lukaku sometimes needs to do the service, he is included in this, he had many ball losses in very promising circumstances, he had a huge chance. Of course we want to serve him, but he is part of the team, and the performance up front, we can do much better.”
