Steven Gerrard admits that Fernando Torres joining Chelsea ‘broke his heart’

Liverpool legend and current Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has come out and said which transfer at Liverpool ‘broke his heart’ after a big player left the club.

According to the Daily Mail, Gerrard admitted that the transfer of Fernando Torres ‘broke his heart’ when the Spanish striker moved to Chelsea for £50million in 2011.

Speaking on the Robbie Fowler podcast Gerrard said: ‘I didn’t play with Torres long enough because he went to Chelsea and broke my heart.

‘I was really, really gutted (when Torres left). We’re working so hard at this point to try and get as close as we can to close the gap and challenge.

‘My relationship with Torres, I was getting a lot of goals at that time. I was at my peak and felt fantastic.

The Liverpool legend said he tried his absolute best to keep Torres at the club and went as far as speaking to Torres’ agent in a desperate bid to convince him to stay.

Torres scored 81 goals in 142 appearances at for Liverpool before his big money move to Stamford Bridge on a dramatic 2011 deadline day transfer leaving Gerrard behind heartbroken.
