“Watching the Premier League games, some of the decisions are very frustrating through VAR and you don’t understand how they have got to that decision. I personally think the game’s better without it.”

Those are the words of former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney who has called for VAR to be scrapped in the Premier League according to Sky Sports.

The newly appointed Derby manager wants referees to be given their old powers of decision-making back following more controversial incidents in the Premier League this weekend.

Not only is the technology frustrating players but spectators also with some going as far as to threaten officials following controversial decisions.

Premier League referee Mike Dean asked to not take part in last weeks Premier League fixtures due to threats made towards him and his family.

Dean chose not to officiate in the Premier League last weekend after receiving abuse and death threats following his controversial red cards given to Southampton’s Jan Bednarek and West Ham’s Tomas Soucek.

Dean’s family was also targeted with social media abuse and incidents of abuse have been reported to the police.

Rooney went on to say: “I personally think the game’s better without it. Even though you are frustrated at times after games, we have to rely on the referees to do the job the best they can

“Even though you don’t agree with some decisions, we have to let them do the job and respect their views on it.”
