Casillas is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers ever to put on a pair of gloves, with his immense success over many years at the Santiago Bernabeu sure to write his name into the history books.
The 41-year-old, who split with his partner of five years back in 2021, has now taken the next step in his extraordinary life by revealing to the world his true sexuality – Iker Casillas is gay.
Casillas is perhaps the most high-profile current or former footballer in history to come out as gay. We have to give him immense credit for his bravery and expect he will receive the respect he desires.
It is, let’s speak plainly, a shock, one which was amplified by a follow-up tweet from Carles Puyol, a rather coy tweet, but one which has had people talking on social media for obvious reasons.
We imagine that we will receive further clarification on the whole situation in due course. In the meantime, we ought to celebrate the bravery of Casillas – this truly is a landmark day for football.
