Ger Loughnane has strongly criticised the Galway senior hurling panel, after their vote of no confidence in manager Anthony Cunningham resulted in emergency talks over the weekend.
Cunningham led the Tribesmen to the All-Ireland final this year, where they were beaten by Kilkenny in a disappointing display.
Loughnane, himself an All-Ireland winning manager with Clare, said the players were wrongly trying to blame the defeat on Cunningham.
“These are grown men,” he wrote today in his column in The Daily Star. “They didn’t deliver when the pressure came on.
“Blaming the manager is a pathetic cop-out.”
Loughnane is familiar with hurling in the county, having endured a difficult time as manager of the Galway senior panel between 2006 and 2008.
He believes Cunningham deserves another chance to win the Liam McCarthy and the players are taking the easy route by blaming him instead of looking to their own responsibilities.
“Galway have plenty of players who talk the talk. But walking the walk? With many of them, forget about it.
“When they should be looking in the mirror after their All-Ireland final collapse, instead they’ve taken the cowardly route.”
Cunningham is reportedly keen to continue as Galway manager despite the recent problems after talks with county board officials yesterday.
