FAI Cup: Giovagnoli’s Dundalk reign off to winning start

Dundalk have progressed to the quarter-finals of the FAI cup as they secured a 2-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers in Filippo Giovagnoli’s first game as manager.

Michael Duffy set Dane Massey up for the opener just after the half hour mark.

The Lilywhites dominated the second-half and they got their reward with 15 minutes to go as Daniel Kelly was fouled in the box, resulting in a spot kick.

David McMillan stepped up to fire the penalty home.

In today’s other FAI cup tie, Sligo Rovers beat First Division side UCD 3-1.

There could easily have been an upset as UCD provided serious competition as they went ahead after seven minutes with a Paul Doyle goal.

Kyle Callan-McFadden equalised in the 16th minute and Ronan Coughlan put Sligo in control with a header in the 66th minute.

Jesse Devers then sealed the win with a third goal 10 minutes before the end.
