Chelsea players reportedly want Stamford Bridge legend Didier Drogba to return to the club this winter to train in the hope that his dressing room influence will help motivate the players and put an end to a dismal run of results.
According to the Sun, several Chelsea players have identified the veteran Ivorian’s summer departure to Montreal Impact in the MLS as a key reason as to why they have started the 2015/16 as badly as they have.
An inside source told the tabloid newspaper, “Didier was always the man who kept spirits up. He can speak three or four languages and was on great terms with pretty much every different nationality in the whole squad.”
Drogba would not rejoin the playing staff at Stamford Bridge, but he is currently available during the North American off-season and just his presence on the training pitch may be enough to help recapture that lost team spirit.
“A few players have spoken about how they miss him and it would be great if he could come back to train and reignite the old spark.”
It’s not uncommon for MLS players to train with European clubs during the winter or at other times. David Beckham has worked with Arsenal and Tottenham in the past, while Thierry Henry also trained with the Gunners when he wasn’t in New York.
In a similar vein Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has already returned to his former club to maintain his fitness until the spring.
