The Australian Open has been put into lockdown after a positive case of Covid-19 was detected at a hotel where players and staff are isolating.

Somewhere between 500 to 600 Australian Open players, staff and officials have been forced to go into isolation after a worker the event tested positive at one of the quarantined hotels being used for the event.

A 26-year-old man has tested positive for Covid-19 – believed to be the UK strain of the virus – after working at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Melbourne’s Central Business District.

The play on Thursday is set to be affected as there are six warm-up events planned at Melbourne Park says Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews. “At this stage there is no impact on the tournament proper.”

Players will be free to return to competitive action once they provide a negative Covid-19 test result

The Australian Open has already been pushed back by three weeks to enable players to quarantine, safely in their hotels before play starts on Monday.
