Arsenal star in hospital recovering from malaria, virus contracted during international break

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed via Instagram that he is recovering from malaria, which he sustained while on international duty with Gabon.

Aubameyang has not been at the peak of his powers this campaign, but Mikel Arteta still would have wanted his captain fit and available for yesterday’s Europa League quarter-final second-leg clash with Slavia Prague.

The Gunners won 4-0 on the night, reaching the semi-final stage at a canter, where they will face Villarreal and former manager Unai Emery over two legs for a place in the final.

The first-leg of that tie will take place on April 29th, which would give Aubameyang less than two weeks to shed the rust that he’s been carrying around over the past couple of weeks and regain his sharpness.

The 31-year-old will likely fancy his chances to achieve that, with an explanation being provided as to why he was off the pace after returning from international duty, notably against Liverpool at the Emirates, with the striker testing positive for malaria.

Thankfully, due to the wonders of modern medicine, malaria is pretty straightforward to treat once detected in one’s system. It shouldn’t be too long before we see Aubameyang in an Arsenal shirt again.
