Arsenal plotting surprise move to snag Liverpool fan-favourite in bid to strengthen midfield

Arsenal are reportedly preparing an offer to rescue former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum from his PSG misery.

Wijnaldum was a key figure for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp was on record revealing his desire for the Dutchman to stick around. However, FSG tightened the purse strings and the two parties were unable to reach an agreement over a contract extension.

With PSG looking to take full advantage of the free agent market over the summer, as soon as the possibility of Wijnaldum becoming available emerged, they made their move. He subsequently signed along the dotted line with the French heavyweights.

However, not all has gone to plan for Wijnaldum, who has been shoe-horned by Mauricio Pochettino into PSG’s so-called ‘superteam’. As the Parisiens faced Lyon on Sunday evening, he found himself fielded at right-wing, some way from his preferred position.

There is already considerable doubt over his continuation as a PSG player long-term, and according to a report published by Fichajes, Arsenal could be prepared to offer him an escape route in the summertime.

Arsenal are in the market for midfield reinforcements, as has been confirmed by BenchWarmers columnist Fabrizio Romano. The report claims that Wijnaldum wouldn’t cost more than €20m, which could make this a shrewd bit of business from the Gunners, should they be successful in pulling it off.
