Stephanie Frappart will become the first woman in history to referee a men’s World Cup match when Costa Rica play Germany on Thursday, 1 December.

In a World Cup that has been surrounded with questions over human rights, the sport has taken a huge step forward as Frappart is set to become the first-ever female referee in the competition’s history. The 38-year-old has become somewhat of a pioneer in this area, having earlier become the first female official in the competition, when she was the fourth official for Mexico’s clash with Poland.

There are two other women included in the referee list for the tournament, with Salima Mukansanga and Yoshimi Yamashita also being selected. Whilst there is still plenty of work to be done in order to achieve equality within officiating, this is without question, a step in the right direction.
