A lower-league match in Brazil got completely out of hand at the weekend, when the referee pulled a gun during the game.
The referee, named Gabriel Murta, had reportedly been on the receiving end of harassment from one team in particular, and their manager also went on to the field to argue with the official.
But that is no excuse for his reaction; running to the dressing rooms and returning armed with a handgun.
Someone on the sidelines began recording as Murta is seen angrily remonstrating with the manager, as another official attempts to lead him away.
The gun is clearly visible in his right hand.
No-one was injured and The Referees’ Association boss Giuliano Bozzano said Murta will be assessed by a psychologist following the incident.
“The Minas Gerais Football Federation has already summoned the referee and a psychologist to a meeting and I’m going to talk with him today,” Bozzano said.
“On the basis of that conversation and his account of events and the results of the psychological assessment I’ll decide what if any measures to take.
“What’s happened is obviously not a common occurrence and I don’t want to rush into anything.
“At the moment it happened he’s opted for getting his gun because in his view it was a question of controlling a situation.”
Controlling the situation?!
Bozzano wins understatement of the year for suggesting it was “not a common occurrence”.
