Reading’s Lucas Joao submitted his contender for miss of the season against Barnsley yesterday evening, and it’s going to take some beating.
Joao’s goal record for this campaign to date is commendable, with the 27-year-old having netted 21 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions.

For that reason, you would have bet your house on him when he found himself with a (genuinely) empty net to pass the ball into against Barnsley yesterday.
But for the distance from goal, and it was hardly a 30-yard effort, it’s difficult to imagine how it could have been any easier for Joao to convert.
Yet, he’s missed. You have to see it to believe it.

Joao was twice capped for Portugal, though, that was way back in 2015. Considering the vast wealth they have in attack, it’s difficult to see him ever making an appearance again.
Especially when he’s competing at this level, all due respect, and especially when he’s missing chances of this nature.
