VIDEO: Professionals like us shouldn’t be conceding goals like that, says Coleman

Republic of Ireland full back Seamus Coleman believes his side should not have conceded the goal against Scotland in such a manner as they did.

After going into the break leading 1-0 thanks to Jonathan Walters’ goal on 38 minutes, it took Ireland less than a minute to relinquish that lead after the break.

Something that irked the Everton defender.

Coleman said: “To have all your hard work in the first half undone very, very early in the second half is massively disappointing.

“It’s hard to take, it feels more like a defeat to be honest.

“Obviously it’s not a good start conceding so early in the half, that’s poor from our point of view.”

Coleman said Ireland manager Martin O’Neill was not very pleased either with the lapse in concentration.

He said: “Like everyone else, he’s disappointed. You can imagine any manager’s reaction straight after that (the Scotland goal).

“We were going to keep it tight and then we concede 45 seconds in, so we got a bit of a slap on the wrist for that, and rightly so.

“As professional players that shouldn’t be happening, 45 seconds into the second half we have to take that on the chin. You can do all the stuff on the training ground, but you can’t really let that happen so early in the second half.

“A lot of people said it’s a must-win, but we won’t give up hope just yet.”
