Nuno Mendes, who is a reported transfer target for Manchester United, suffered a horrific injury during Sporting’s 1-1 draw with Moreirense yesterday evening.
As reported by Portuguese outlet Record, Man United have been linked with making a move to sign Mendes, an 18-year-old left-back who is already a fully fledged starter for Sporting and the Portuguese national team.

However, any possibility of Mendes moving clubs this summer appears to have been ended by an injury he suffered yesterday night, which looks certain to rule him out of the European Championships in the summer.

It’s an unfortunate one. While the tackle is heavy, it’s fair, and an honest attempt to play the ball. Mendes’ ankle has unfortunately just got stuck underneath and turned the wrong way, leaving him in a great deal of pain.
Manchester United, or any other interested party, are not going to sign an injured player, meaning Mendes may well have to wait for his move to the big time. For now, his focus ought to be on getting better.
