Tottenham chucked out of Conference League as UEFA punish them for COVID outbreak

Tottenham Hotspur have been chucked out of the UEFA Europa Conference League at the group stage following the postponement of their clash with Rennes.

Spurs informed UEFA that they were unable to fulfil their tussle with the French outfit the week before last as a result of a COVID-19 outbreak within the camp. The game was subsequently called off.

While the logical thing to do would be to attempt to rearrange the fixture, with it not being Spurs’ fault that they were not successful in fielding a team for the game, UEFA have punished the North London outfit instead.

It was announced on Monday morning that the decision had been made to award Rennes a 3-0 win, which saw them finish as group winners, with Vitesse Arnhem in second-place and Tottenham were eliminated.

Though Tottenham fans will not see it as a bad thing to be out of the tournament and focusing on their top four battle, they may well feel aggrieved to have been thrown out of the competition in such circumstances.

Even with their patchy European form in mind, Tottenham will have headed into the game as favourites to triumph and progress. UEFA have robbed them of the opportunity to achieve that.
