Erik ten Hag identifies £75m star as his first Manchester United signing

Erik ten Hag has reportedly identified Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse as the player he wants to sign to strengthen Manchester United’s midfield.

It has recently been announced that ten Hag will be Man United’s new manager beyond the end of the season, taking the reins from interim boss Ralf Rangnick, who will be managing the Austrian National Team going forward.

While ten Hag has a rich history of developing players and producing miracles in the absence of a £100m+ transfer budget, the assumption is that the club will provide him with a hefty amount of cash to spend this summer.

The Sun believe that they know the identity of one player that ten Hag will be targeting, too, and he won’t be heading back to Amsterdam in search of summer reinforcements. Instead, ten Hag will go shopping on the south coast.

As per the report, he is keen on drafting in England international James Ward-Prowse from Southampton. The understanding is that any deal to sign the Saints’ set-piece specialist could cost as much as £75m.

It has been well established that Man United need to strengthen in the midfield areas, with Ward-Prowse having had a fantastic campaign. He won’t come cheap, but it may well be a price worth paying.
