During the match, an unusual event happened. Musetti was issued a code violation after he kicked a ball in frustration, which struck a line judge.
The Italian was lucky that he was allowed to continue the game.
Musetti won the first set, but became annoyed when he failed to get back on serve in the second set. At 5-3, the ball kid threw a ball towards him, but Musetti, out of frustration, kicked the ball away, and unintentionally it hit the lineswoman in the chest.
The umpire announced: “Code violation unsportsmanlike conduct, warning, Mr Musetti.”
Frances Tiafoe has spoken out after Lorenzo Musetti was not disqualified.
“Yeah, I mean, obviously he did that and nothing happened. I think that’s comical, but it is what it is,” he said.
Musetti apologised immediately for his action.
He said: “Honestly, I was a little bit scared, because I really didn’t want to harm nobody, of course.
“So I immediately went to the line umpire, and of course I said sorry. I apologise to everyone.
“It was right to have a warning, but I think the umpire saw that there was no intention about that, and that’s why probably just, you know, let me continue my game.”
Tennis fans will remember that Novak Djokovic was eliminated from the 2020 US Open for a similar incident, and Tim Henman was kicked out of Wimbledon for injuring a ball girl in 1995.
