Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has made a shocking claim that Bruno Fernandes does not deserve to be crowned the PFA ‘Player of the Year’.

Scholes turned out for United for 22 years (1991 – 2013), during a career that saw the Englishman lift a whopping 27 major trophies, including 11 Premier League titles.

It’s safe to say – After working under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson and being named in 710 matches in all competitions, the retired legend knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a success at Old Trafford.

One player looking to go some way to replicating the legendary status Scholes created, is current midfield star Bruno Fernandes.

Since joining a little over 12-months ago from Sporting Lisbon, Fernandes’ on-field contributions have been a total revelation.

The Portuguese star has already racked up an impressive 34 goals and 21 assists in just 64 matches, in all competitions.

Despite topping the club’s charts in more or less every area, Scholes still feels like the 26-year-old needs to do more if he’s to be crowned England’s best player.

Speaking in a recent interview with Optus Sport, as quoted by MEN, Scholes said: “What he’s brought to this United team has been special.
“He creates goals, scores – not in the big games! – but in a lot of them.

“Ultimately, at Man United you are there to win titles and big games and he has to be a bigger influence than that.

“I could give him a bit of an excuse with United’s centre-halves – to me, they need protecting too much, especially in the big games against proper forward players.

“(The central midfielders) sit too deep and he doesn’t get the support from the midfield players, which is important to him.

“It is not just the ability he has got, he needs bodies around him to take people away, so he can come into spaces, be a player who is controlling the midfield, and that brings the best out of him.

“This will be a problem for United until they solve it. They need to sign a centre-half who is dominant, takes the ball off people, look what City have done with [Ruben] Dias… all the teams that have won the league in recent years: [Vincent] Kompany, [Virgil] Van Dijk.

“He should be right in the mix (for PFA Player of the Year), there is no doubt about that, but I am always a believer the best players are the players playing for the team that wins the league and there are a few City players I’d go for before Bruno.”
