At 95 years of age Paddy Prendergast the last member of the All-Ireland winning Mayo panel has passed away. The Ballintubber club man was a full-back on the last side from the western county to lift the Sam Maguire when they beat Meath in Croke Park in 1951.

It is rather difficult to comprehend, or is it? that the passing of 94 year old Mayo All Ireland winner Paddy Prendergast is subject for discussion across the nation this morning. May he rest in peace. pic.twitter.com/oUELVFsSBS

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Paddy Prendergast. An absolute gentleman, community man & memory sharer. He gifted my parents & I so much time in #Tralee in 2015. This day 70 years ago, 23rd Sept 1951, he gifted Mayo so much. Forever grateful.💚❤️ #RestWellPaddy pic.twitter.com/kUZjpLrneT

Mayo are still yet to lift the Sam Maguire and the wait goes on and on for the western county. They came extremely close to doing so again this year, having lost narrowly to Tyrone in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park. Will all know about the famous curse that haunts the Mayo team, but is it more that Mayo got beaten by better teams? None the less we send our best wishes to Paddy Prendergast’s family and friends at this sad time. The Ballintubber won back to back All-Ireland’s with Mayo back in the 1950’s and was living in Tralee for the latter part of his life.
