McGregor: I knew I was going to win

Conor McGregor says he is “overwhelmed” after becoming the UFC interim featherweight champion overnight.

After being taken down four times by Chad Mendes in Las Vegas, McGregor .

He cut an emotional figure after the fight, when he spoke to UFC.com.

He said: “I knew this was my night and I created this. And I knew that no matter who was going to come facing against me, it didn’t matter, I was going to win.

“It just overwhelmed me, the whole thing. And then through it all, seeing the Irish stick by me and travelling in their droves like they did.

“I didn’t really get to embrace that at the weigh-ins, because I am in a different place then.”

The Dubliner then admitted that the emotion of the win had just hit him.

He said: “It’s been a long, long road. I jumped up on that cage and my coach jumped on the cage with me and I just felt a rush of emotion like I cannot explain.”

The victory now tees up a unification fight between the Irishman and Jose Aldo which will also take place in Vegas.

January 2, 2016, is the date being mooted.
