News coming out of Mayo GAA this evening is that clubman Liam Carey has passed away.
Liam, or ‘Lily’, as he was fondly known, is recognised as one of the most pivotal figures in the history of Kiltane GAA Club since its inception in 1962.

Kiltane GAA Club received the extremely sad and most unexpected news on Sunday evening last of the death of Lily (Liam) Carey of Bangor Erris.
Lily had a lifelong association with his beloved Kiltane which started with its establishment in 1962 and continued for over half a century. He also had an extended and very successful involvement with the North Mayo GAA Board, from his role as secretary to that of board chairman before concluding with its presidency. He also spent several years representing the club at county board meetings regularly travelling the ever winding and challenging road to Castlebar. However, arguably the greatest of all his involvements and achievements were that of the club, under his management, winning county titles at junior and intermediate level in 1972 and 1973 and reaching a county senior semi final in 1974, before one of the most outstanding success stories in GAA club history came to an end at semi final replay stage. Lily was also one of the founder members of the club, who had the foresight in a quite different era, of the need to provide a healthy and sporting environment within the great parish of Kiltane. His contribution will be forever remembered.
To his wife Detty, whose house always had an open door, his son Adrien, his daughters Catherine, Breege and Avril, and extended family, the club extends its most sincere sympathy. Ar Dheis De Go Raibh a Anam.
