Ryan Mullen lies fourth in cycling’s individual men’s time trial at the European Games in Baku after a tremendous performance from the Irishman.

The 20-year-old, with the An Post Chain Reaction team, crossed the finishing line 22 seconds outside the medals having moved up the field strongly throughout the 52km event at Bilgah Beach, north of the Azeri capital.

Mullen was lying eighth after the first section, but within two kilometres of the line had moved to within a shot at the medals, but couldn’t find the additional legs needed to overhaul Latvia’s Gatis Smulkis.

With riders still out on the road, a short time ago Luis Sanchez Gil of Spain was leading.

In the women’s individual time trial, Caroline Ryan finished 15th with gold going to Ellen van Dijk of the Netherlands, three minutes ahead of Ryan.

Sean McComb is through to the televised stages of the lightweight boxing after a unanimous points over Tymur Beliak of Ukraine at the Crystal Hall.

Chloe Aboud was beaten 14-6 by Swede Swede Elin Johansson in the preliminary round of the women’s 67kg taekwondo, while Alexander Dolly lost 4-0 in the 86kg freestyle wrestling to Taimuraz Friev Naskidaeva of Spain.
