Germany has been eliminated from the World Cup in the group stage for the second tournament in a row.

After their shock opening defeat to Japan, there were worries that Germany could repeat their 2018 World Cup. When after defeats to Mexico and then South Korea they were launched out of the tournament.

Unfortunately for Hansi Flick’s men, their fears became reality when Spain’s surprise 2-1 loss to Japan, pushed them down to third place.

Serge Gnabry opened the scoring with a fantastic header in the 10th minute to put his side ahead.

Yeltsin Tejeda the drew the game level just after half-time.

Costa Rica then shocked everybody and took the lead just over ten minutes later.

Immediately after Kai Havertz drew the game level once again.

Havertz then doubled his tally when he got onto the end of a curling Gnabry cross.

After coming off the bench, Niclas Füllkrug then stabbed home the German’s fourth and last goal.

Japan have topped the group and are now set to face Morocco on Tuesday night. Depending on who you ask this could be a blessing in disguise, Spain have avoided playing the historically better team in Croatia.

If 2018 is anything to go by, this will not end well for Flick and the German players.
