I always thought in union if the ball goes backwards relative to the pitch then it can’t be a knock-on. There’s enough fumbles in open play that go forward out the hand but backwards to the pitch that are let go

If an attacking French player had touched the ball like that, it would definitely have been called a knock on. Both can’t be true.
