FIFA launch investigation into Argentina after fiery clash with the Netherlands

FIFA has opened an investigation into Argentina’s conduct after their chaotic quarter-final with the Netherlands.

Argentina booked their place in the semi-final after a nervy penalty shootout win against the Netherlands on Friday night. The South American side threw away a two-goal lead in added time when Wout Weghorst came off the bench and found the back of the net twice.

The match had already descended into chaos with the referee issuing a record-breaking 18 yellow cards.

FIFA have now announced that they will be investigating the fiery clash, the statement reads:

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association due to potential breaches of articles 12 (Misconduct of players and officials) and 16 (Order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

“Additionally, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Dutch Football Association due to potential breaches of article 12 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in relation to the same match.”

Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez carried on antagonising the Dutch with heated interviews after the full-time whistle.
