Chloe and Sam Magee will have to content themselves with a bronze medal after being beaten in their mixed doubles semi-final at the European Games badminton in Baku.
The Irish par just missed out in a hard-fought encounter against Gaetan Mittelheisser and Audrey Fontaine.
The French pair wrapped up the opening game 21-12 in just 13 minutes, after an early Irish lead of two, but the Magees made a better fight of the second set by pushing the game into extra points, eventually losing it 23-21.
The focus will be on the Crystal Hall later when Katie Taylor and Michael O’Reilly fight for boxing gold.
Taylor is in the women’s lightweight final against Estelle Mossely of France at 2pm Irish time, while O’Reilly of Portlaoise, having sat out yesterday’s semi-final due to a walkover, will fight a tough home Azeri in Xaybula Musalov in the middleweight final at 3:15pm Irish time.
This morning, Emma Reid qualified for the 50m butterfly semi-finals by clocking 28.16 to finish equal fifth in her heat, going through in 14th.
Ireland finished eighth in their men’s 4x100m medley relay semi-final, and there was no progress for James Brown, Ben Doyle, Andrew Moore, Niamh Kilgallen or Danielle Hill.
As Taylor and O’Reilly have not had the colour of their medals confirmed yet, Ireland lies 32nd in the medals table with one silver and three bronze.
