Bournemouth captain Adam Smith sends support to Antoine Semenyo amid alleged racial abuse

Liverpool won their opening game of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, beating AFC Bournemouth 4-2 at Anfield.

Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo scored to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead.

The Cherries came back strongly through Antoine Semenyo, who scored twice to make it 2-2.

However, late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah sealed the tie in Liverpool’s favour.

The match was suspended for a while in the first half after Semenyo accused a fan of racist abuse.

Semenyo ran to the touchline with referee Anthony Taylor. He was seen arguing with a fan as he was about to take a throw-in.

The winger then reported an alleged racist incident to Taylor. Liverpool have strongly condemned the act, with Arne Slot describing the incident as ‘shocking’.

Adam Smith admitted Bournemouth were shocked by the incident.

He said: “I’m kind of in shock to be honest that it happened. In this day and age, it shouldn’t be happening.

“He’s a little bit down obviously. We’ll support him in there and hopefully he’ll be OK.

“I wanted him to react, because that’s what I would have done, I would have gone straight over there.

“It shows what type of man he is. To come up with them goals it shows what type of character he is.”
