Gymnast Kieran Behan has got Ireland’s European Games campaign up and running in Baku by qualifying for Thursday’s all-around finals and Saturday’s men’s floor final.

Behan qualified in fifth position in the floor competition with an impressive score of 15.066, giving him a strong chance of glory at the weekend in a venue based directly opposite the Athletes Village.

In the team finals, Ireland’s men finished 17th and the women were 18th as Russia won gold in both competitions.

Ireland’s paddlers missed out on tomorrow’s medals action as Andrzej Jezierski was fifth in his C1 200m semi-final, Tom Brennan was eighth in the K1 200m semis, and Jennifer Egan finished in an identical position in the K1 200m semis. All three had progressed through their first-round heats.

Eighth place was also the fate of Peter Egan and Simas Dobrovolskis in the men’s K2 200m heats.

Russia are top of the medals table with nine golds among their haul of 15 medals by the end of Day Three, with hosts Azerbaijan winning the most medals so far – 16 – with seven of them gold.
