Gareth Southgate decided to field a far less experienced second-string squad with Henderson who was awarded the captaincy playing in the middle of the park.
The former Liverpool man was substituted off in the 79th minute and was met with a chorus of boos from some sections of the stadium.
Henderson completed a controversial move to Saudi Arabia in the summer and has been heavily criticised since for his stance on LGBTQ rights.
Both Southgate and Kieran Trippier backed him after the game, with Henderson putting out his own message on Instagram.
