These 5 stars are not at the World Cup – is it an advantage for their clubs?

The FIFA World Cup is considered as the tournament of the best football nations in the world. Accordingly, the best players of the present should also be on show here. Nevertheless, some of the biggest superstars in current football miss the 2022 World Cup.

Apart from long-term injuries, the most common reason is a missed World Cup qualification of their own national team. For the players, this is often the end of a great dream. Their clubs, on the other hand, often see it as an advantage for their own success.

Major sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup are regarded as highlights in the careers of professional football players. For all fans of sports betting, a World Cup is also a highlight of the year. Here, the best betting sites entice with lucrative odds and special offers. This makes the tournament of the world’s best football nations an exciting event for everyone. Even for those at home.

Your own players miss the World Cup: a reason to rejoice?

The 2022 World Cup is considered special mainly because of its timing in the middle of the season. As a rule, the major tournaments of the national teams are held in the summer after the end of the club competitions. Accordingly, the 2022 Winter World Cup in Qatar ensures a higher load on the players within the season.

This results in a major concern for the clubs. Injuries to the national team have always been considered a major evil by all clubs. The timing of the 2022 World Cup in the middle of the season further increases the fear of club officials. Nothing is worse than their own top performers getting injured with the national team and missing matches in the regular season.

In contrast, those in charge and especially the coaches are happy about all the players who do not travel to the World Cup. With these players, they can prepare optimally for the upcoming matches of their own team. In addition to sufficient time for regeneration, the coaching team can draw up a detailed training plan. With ideally prepared players, the upcoming tasks can then be tackled.

A missed World Cup is a great disappointment for players, but for those in charge it is often a dream come true. A number of top international stars will also be missing from the 2022 World Cup.

Erling Haaland

In the summer, half the world wanted to sign the top striker from Norway. In the end, Erling Haaland opted for the reigning English champions Manchester City. The 22-year-old world star is now doing great there. The situation is different for the Norwegian national team. Norway was already eliminated in the group stage of the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Not even the play-offs were reached.

One of the decisive factors was the absence of goal scorer Haaland due to injury. In the end, the young Norwegian missed the four decisive matches of the past World Cup qualification. No wonder Norway missed another World Cup. The Scandinavian country had not been represented at a World Cup since 1998.

Mohamed Salah

For the winger of Champions League finalists Liverpool FC, the dream of a second World Cup participation came to a particularly tragic end. In the final round of the African World Cup qualifiers, Salah’s Egyptian national team only lost to Senegal in a penalty shoot-out in the decisive match. Mohamed Salah was the first shooter and took responsibility.

However, he was irritated by numerous laser pointers as he ran up to take the shot, so that he missed in the end. His long-time team-mate Sadio Mané, of all people, who plays for the Senegalese national team, sank the decisive penalty. Instead of Salah’s Egyptian national team, Senegal with Mané drew the ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. A bitter disappointment for the North African country.

Superstar Mohamed Salah in particular was hoping for a second consecutive World Cup appearance. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Egypt was eliminated in the group stage, but winger Salah scored both of Egypt’s goals in the tournament. For the now 30-year-old Egyptian, this could be the last chance to take part in the World Cup with his home country.

David Alaba

Three-time UEFA Champions League winner David Alaba will also miss the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. For many years, the Austrian played for the German record champions Bayern Munich. In the meantime, he is the head of defence at Real Madrid. Alaba has been less successful with the Austrian national team. Although the current Austrian national team has often been called the golden generation, it was not enough to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In the play-offs, the Austrians lost to the national team from Wales. Afterwards, the already controversial national coach Franco Foda resigned. Meanwhile, the Austrians have not qualified for a World Cup since 1998. So even superstar David Alaba still has to wait for his World Cup debut.

The example of Jorginho shows how fast-moving professional football is. Last year, the central midfielder won the European Championship with the Italian national team. Afterwards, Jorginho was honoured as Europe’s Footballer of the Year. In the meantime, the euphoria in Italy has long since given way to great disappointment.

The reigning European champions and four-time world champions missed out on qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The disappointment was particularly great because the failure came in the wake of an embarrassing defeat against underdog North Macedonia. It was only in the second minute of injury time that midfield strategist Jorginho’s team conceded the decisive goal to defeat the North Macedonian national team.

While the team was still able to score points at the last European Championship with great team spirit and a clever strategy, the Italian team regularly fell apart during setbacks in the World Cup qualifiers and missed out on the 2022 World Cup as a result.

Jadon Sancho

For a long time, the Manchester United winger was considered a great hope for the English national team. Especially at his former club Borussia Dortmund, the young Englishman impressed with great performances. He then moved back to the English island in the summer of 2021 for a hefty fee of 85 million euros. Since then, things have gone much worse for Sancho.

For a long time, the now 22-year-old winger did not get a chance to play for the Red Devils due to injuries, poor form and the huge competition. Of course, this also affected his career with the English national team. Sancho has not been the first choice for a long time. The competition for the Three Lions is also extremely fierce.

Accordingly, national coach Gareth Southgate decided against nominating Jadon Sancho for the England World Cup squad. A bitter disappointment for Sancho. Erik ten Hag, coach of Manchester United, on the other hand, will be happy to see a fit Jadon Sancho in the Premier League.
