“I spoke with Luis Diaz on the phone” – Manager reveals how he almost beat Liverpool to exciting attacker in January

West Ham manager David Moyes has revealed that the Hammers almost signed Luis Diaz from Porto in January before he joined Liverpool.

As soon as Diaz signed along the dotted line with Liverpool in January, rival fans will have feared that the Reds were getting yet another attacking gem through the door.

Jurgen Klopp has a rather annoying habit of signing the most potent and exciting attackers in the game, before they are established superstars.

Diaz looks to be yet another to add to an ever-growing list of hits, but were things to play out differently, he could have ended up at West Ham in January.

Hammers boss David Moyes is quoted by talkSPORT saying: “It’s true. I spoke with Luis Diaz on the phone and we were quite far down the line to sign him from Porto.”

“My understanding is Liverpool were going to come in for him in the summer, and I was going to try and get him in January. I don’t know if us trying to get him in January affected Liverpool‘s decision but he’s a really good player.”

We could look back at this as one of those ‘what if’ situations. Should Diaz go on to be a roaring success at Anfield, West Ham fans are going to be absolutely gutted that he slipped through their fingers…
