The Après Match crew made a welcome return to our TV screens last night, with the first episode of new show Après Match of the Day shown on RTE2 after the match.
Football fans worn down by watching the uninspiring Euro 2016 qualifier between Ireland and Georgia cheered up at the thoughts of new material from the crew.
#aprèsmatch is the only good thing about Irish international soccer

According to RTE the new show will have “Ireland’s premier league comedy team bring back to life the matches that defined three decades of glory with the type of post and pre-match analysis that we wish we’d had back then”.
They started last night by mixing sketches with archive footage to take a unique look back at the greatest day of them all – Ireland’s 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Romania to reach the quarterfinals of the 1990 World Cup.

The mix worked well, with an overdubbed musical reference to Portmarnock Golf Club’s Men Only status just one of many giggles.

There was serious attention to detail shown in the show – for many the ads were the highlight of the show.
Folks this #ApresMatch is gold!! With the old vintage ads ???
— Rob Timony (@RobTimony) September 7, 2015
They could do a full programme of old adverts #apresmatch Weren't the ads very racey in the 90's "you can put a bit of butter on my arse"

The new show caught a lot of viewers by surprise, with some switching over when they saw it mentioned on Twitter, and other disappointed to find they had missed it.
Sorry I missed the beginning of that. Looked great. Fair play #apresmatch

The bad news, due to rights issues it won’t be available on RTE Player to watch back.
Due to rights issues around the archive football footage on "Après Match of the Day", we are unfortunately unable to carry it on @RTEPlayer.

The good news, it was just the first in a new series, yay!
Watch the next episode next Monday on RTE2 at 10.ffpm – when the lads take a look back at Liam Brady’s debut against the USSR in 1974.
Welcome back lads, you were missed.
