Didier Drogba marked his first Major League Soccer start with a perfect hat-trick as the Montreal Impact won 4-3 against the Chicago Fire.

Nigel Reo-Coker set up the former Chelsea striker for his first goal in the 27th minute and after Jeff Larentowicz equalised from a penalty, Wandrille Lefevre headed the Impact back in front.

The Fire went 3-2 up through Gilberto and Kennedy Igboananike but within six minutes, Drogba lashed home left-footed after Ignacio Piatti’s quick free-kick and then nodded home his third after his initial shot was well saved by Sean Johnson.

Clint Dempsey starred on his return to the Seattle Sounders line-up as they beat Toronto FC 2-1.

The former Fulham and Tottenham forward set up the opening goal for strike partner Obafemi Martins in the sixth minute and, after former Sounder Eriq Zavaleta equalised for Toronto, Dempsey scored Seattle’s winner after Martins’ shot was parried.

The win takes Seattle third in the Western Conference while Toronto lie fifth in the East, three points behind the New England Revolution who beat Orlando City 3-0.

Diego Fagundez opened the scoring shortly before half-time but it was not until the 84th minute that the Revs made the game safe through Juan Agudelo. Chris Tierney added a third in stoppage time.

Conor Casey scored twice, including an 86th-minute winner, as the Philadelphia Union beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1. The Quakes had led through Chris Wondolowski’s goal.
