Video: The punch that saw Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez stop Billy Joe Saunders in super-middleweight title fight

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez stopped Billy Joe Saunders in Texas to unify the WBC, WBA and WBO super-middleweight titles.

Saunders was causing Canelo problems in the early rounds, but his body eventually caved to the onslaught that was being dealt by the Mexican fighter.

BJS, who was looking to pull of a shock by beating boxing’s pound-for-pound number one, fought commendably, but an eye injury forced his corner into pulling him out.

It’s easy to understand how such an injury was sustained if you’ve ever seen Canelo in action. The speed and the power are equally devastating.

Have a look at the punch which did the damage, with Canelo slipping an attempted right hook from Saunders before landing a beautiful uppercut right onto his eye.

There’s no shame in Saunders being unable to continue after being hit with a shock like that and suffering such a potentially severe injury.

This could not have been foreseen, but that’s the difficulty of stepping into the ring with Canelo – it’s hard to foresee anything other than your inevitable demise.
