Video: Non-League side knock Wayne Rooney’s Derby out of the FA Cup

Non-League side Chorley FC are currently living the dream with the National League North side overcoming Wayne Rooney’s Derby County in the FA Cup with the final score Chorley 2-0 Derby.

Derby were hit with an outbreak of Covid-19 and the entire first team along with Wayne Rooney are currently self isolating meaning they had to send a selection youth players to Chorley. This wasn’t going to stop Chorley from trying their best to progress further in the FA Cup and this gave Jamie Vermiglio’s side a chance to shine in front of television cameras with many outlets broadcasting the game.

Chorley went 1-0 in the 10th minute after some sloppy defending from the young Derby side with the players unable to clear the ball from a corner and it bounced from head to head before going into the back of the Derby net with Chorley’s Connor Hall getting the credit.

The 2 sides then went into half time with the score at 1-0 to the home side and I’m sure the Derby management had some stern words for the youngsters.

In the second half Chorley dominated the game statistically according to LiveScore, the non-league side had 59% possession at the end of the game with 16 attempts on goal and Derby only managing 1 attempt in the full 90 minutes. This powerful display worked out for them with Chorley able to bag a second goal in the dying minutes as Mike Calveley bagged the winner and secured progression into the next.

The magic of the cup, it can’t be beaten.
